This volume provides an ethnographic description of Muslim merit-making rhetoric, rituals and rationales in Thailand’s Malay far-south. This study is situated in Cabetigo, one of Pattani’s oldest and most important Malay communities that has been subjected to a range of Thai and Islamic influences over the last hundred years. The volume describes religious rhetoric related to merit-making being conducted in both Thai and Malay, that the spiritual currency of merit is generated through the performance of locally occurring Malay adat, and globally normative amal 'ibadat. Concerning the rationale for merit-making, merit-makers are motivated by both a desire to ensure their own comfort in the grave and personal vindication at judgment, as well as to transfer merit for those already in the grave, who are known to the merit-maker. While the rhetoric elements of Muslim merit-making reveal Thai influence, its ritual elements confirm the local impact of reformist activism.

The Masyumi Party, which was active in Indonesia from 1945 to 1960, constitutes the boldest attempt to date at reconciling Islam and democracy. Masyumi proposed a vision of society and government which was not bound by a literalist application of Islamic doctrine but rather inspired by the values of Islam. It set out moderate policies which were both favourable to the West and tolerant towards other religious communities in Indonesia. Although the party made significant strides towards the elaboration of a Muslim democracy, its achievements were nonetheless precarious: it was eventually outlawed in 1960 for having resisted Sukarno’s slide towards authoritarianism, and the refusal of Suharto’s regime to reinstate the party left its leaders disenchanted and marginalised. Many of those leaders subsequently turned to a form of Islam known as integralism, a radical doctrine echoing certain characteristics of 19th-century Catholic integralism, which contributed to the advent of Muslim neo-fundamentalism in Indonesia. This book examines the Masyumi Party from its roots in early 20th-century Muslim reformism to its contemporary legacy, and offers a perspective on political Islam which provides an alternative to the more widely-studied model of Middle-Eastern Islam. The party’s experience teaches us much about the fine line separating a moderate form of Islam open to democracy and a certain degree of secularisation from the sort of religious intransigence which can threaten the country’s denominational coexistence.

Pada tahun 1972, dalam upaya merestorasi Masjid Agung San‘a, Yaman, para kuli bangunan yang bekerja di antara struktur bagian dalam dan luar atap, tanpa sengaja menemukan “kuburan kertas”. Ternyata, di dalam “kuburan kertas” itu ditemukan codex (manuskrip kuno dalam bentuk buku) Al-Quran. Temuan ini kemudian digunakan oleh seorang penulis, Toby Lester, untuk mempertanyakan keaslian Al-Quran. Tulisan Lester dengan judul “What is the Koran?”, yang dimuat di jurnal The Atlantic Monthly edisi Januari 1999, itu langsung menyulut kontroversi. Belum reda isu tersebut, pada tahun 2000, seorang Profesor Bahasa Semitik, Christoph Luxenberg, menerbitkan sebuah buku yang didasarkan pada temuan di Masjid Agung San‘a tersebut. Buku itu terbit dalam bahasa Jerman dengan judul Die Syro-Aramaeische Lesart des Koran: Ein Beitrag zur Entschluesselung der Koransprache (Qira’ah Syria-Aramaik: Upaya Menjelaskan Bahasa Al-Quran), yang mengungkapkan bahwa versi Al-Quran yang ada saat ini salah salin dan berbeda dengan teks aslinya. Buku Luxenberg ini pun kemudian menyulut kontroversi setelah majalah Newsweek, edisi 28 Juli 2003, memberitakannya dalam judul “Challenging the Qur’an”. Buku Al-Quran Bukan Da Vinci’s Code ini menyoroti secara terperinci dua tulisan menggegerkan tersebut dan menunjukkan bahwa Kitab Suci umat Islam, Al-Quran, bukanlah kitab suci yang kemudian lembek atau menjadi kitab biasa yang tak berwibawa dengan adanya tuduhan-tuduhan itu. Setelah di bab pertama buku ini membahas tuduhan-tuduhan tersebut, bab kedua dan ketiga buku ini mengungkapkan keautentikan Al-Quran dan mukjizatnya yang disampaikan oleh tokoh-tokoh baik Muslim maupun non-Muslim yang memiliki kompetensi di bidang itu. Pada masa khalifah Umar, wilayah Qadisiyah yang termasuk kota besar di Persia (Iran dan Irak sekarang ini) ditaklukan dan Sa’d bin Abi Waqqash, salah satu dari sepuluh sahabat yang dijamin masuk surga ketika hidupnya, menjadi Amirnya. Setelah beberapa waktu lamanya, Umar memerintahkan Sa’d mengirim sahabat Nadhlah bin Muawiyah untuk menaklukan Hulwan, masih termasuk wilayah Persia lainnya. Dengan 300 orang tentara berkuda, Nadhlah melakukan pengepungan Kota Hulwan beberapa waktu lamanya sehingga mereka menyerah, menyatakan takluk kepada Madinah. Nadhlah kembali ke Qadisiyah dengan membawa jizyah dan ghanimah yang cukup banyak. Di tengah perjalanan, mereka singgah di suatu dataran di bawah pegunungan karena telah masuk waktu shalat. Nadhlah berdiri melantunkan adzan, tetapi di sela-sela jawaban adzan dari anggota pasukannya, terdengar suara lain dari atas gunung yang menimpali suara adzannya, dan mereka semua mendengarnya cukup jelas. Ketika ia melantunkan : Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar (2x), terdengar suara jawaban, “Engkau telah mengagungkan Dzat Yang Maha Besar, wahai Nadhlah!!” Ketika ia melantunkan : Asyhadu allaa ilaaha illallaah (2), terdengar suara jawaban, “Itu adalah kalimat ikhlas, wahai Nadhlah!!” Ketika ia melantunkan : Asyhadu anna muhammadar rasuululaah (2), terdengar suara jawaban, “Wahai Nadhlah, dia (Nabi Muhammad SAW itu) adalah orang yang diberitahukan Nabi Isa (Jesus) kepada kami!!\

Indonesia's Muslims are still pondering the role of religion in public life. Although the religious violence marring the transition towards democratic reform has ebbed, the Muslim community has polarised into reactionary and progressive camps with increasingly antagonistic views on the place of Islam in society. Debates over the underlying principles of democratisation have further heated up after a fatwa issued by conservative religious scholars condemned secularism, pluralism and liberalism as un-Islamic. With a hesitant government dominated by Indonesia's eternal political elites failing to take a clear stance, supporters of the decision are pursuing their Islamisation agendas with renewed vigour, displaying growing intolerance towards other religions and what they consider deviant Muslim minorities. Extremist and radical exponents of this Islamist bloc receive more international media coverage and scholarly attention than their progressive opponents who are defiantly challenging this reactionary trend. Calling for a true transformation of Indonesian society based on democratic principles and respect for human rights, they insist that this depends on secularisation, religious toleration, and freethinking. Indonesia's Islamic organizations sustain the country's thriving civil society, democracy, and reputation for tolerance amid diversity. Yet scholars poorly understand how these organizations envision the accommodation of religious difference. What does tolerance mean to the world's largest Islamic organizations? What are the implications for democracy in Indonesia and the broader Muslim world? Jeremy Menchik argues that answering these questions requires decoupling tolerance from liberalism and investigating the historical and political conditions that engender democratic values. Drawing on archival documents, ethnographic observation, comparative political theory, and an original survey, Islam and Democracy in Indonesia demonstrates that Indonesia's Muslim leaders favor a democracy in which individual rights and group-differentiated rights converge within a system of legal pluralism, a vision at odds with American-style secular government but common in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe.
